Malnutrition & Dehydration In NJ-FL Nursing Homes
Malnutrition in NJ and FL nursing
homes is a serious health hazard that can lead to weight loss, illness or death.
Every nursing home resident has the right to proper food and feeding
(nutrition, eating) and to proper water and liquids (hydration, drinking), for
patient total
adequate fluid and nutritional intake.
Being malnourished or dehydrated
can cause serious complications for an elderly person, and especially if
there is an underlying illness for which the person is already
suffering. Conversely, a bout of malnourishment (malnutrition) or
dehydration can be exacerbated by underlying illness including:
-
diseases including gastroenteritis
-
any of several gastrointestinal
disorders
-
hypovolemic shock due to injury or
sepsis
-
diarrhea, vomiting or other
loss of bodily fluids
-
blood loss or hypotension, as due to
physical trauma
Also related to malnutrition is a number
of deficiency diseases, including a lack of certain essential
vitamins and minerals in the diet. Every NJ-FL nursing home should have
case workers including dieticians or nutritionists who specialize in
meeting the resident's dietary needs, for planning meals and
supplements.
Proper nutrition and hydration
(water) is essential for proper bodily functions, fighting off diseases,
metabolism (energy), and general health and well being in a Florida or
New Jersey nursing home. Fuel in the form of carbohydrates, proteins and
fats are essential for health, avoiding morbidity and mortality.
