Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia In NJ-FL Nursing Homes
Dementia and the more extreme
disease Alzheimer's makes life in the senior years very
challenging for the patient, family and caregivers, including in New
Jersey and Florida nursing homes. The memory loss and confusion,
including non-recognition of nursing staff requires awareness and
special attention.
These diseases which affect memory
and mental capacity are generally defined as follows:
-
Dementia - a progressive
disorder due to brain damage or disease and resulting in a decline
in cognitive function including memory, language and problem solving
- it is far more common in the geriatric population than any other
age group - it is often wrongly mistaken for depression or psychosis
-
Alzheimer - this is the most
common and severe form of advanced dementia, and is generally
untreatable, incurable, degenerative and terminal - symptoms likely
include confusion, irritability and mood swings, aggression,
language deterioration, withdrawal, long-term memory loss, or a
combination of these
Many NJ and FL nursing home residents,
unfortunately, suffer from some degree of dementia. Although dementia
which does not have an organic cause is generally not treatable, it is
known that such patients do benefit from good healthcare, eating a
balanced diet, regular exercising, social activity and mental
stimulation.
These degenerative diseases of the
mind are distressing to the patient as well as those caring for him. Our
lawyer-attorney is happy to discuss a case or lawsuit where poor care in
the nursing home setting causes an exacerbation of illness or injury.
